The nun who saved Big B
BANGALORE: The last time Big B was in hospital, it was a catholic nun from Bangalore who nursed him back to life.
Sister Teresa Marie helped nurse a badly wounded Amitabh Bachchan back to life after he crashed against a table on the sets of Coolie. A grateful Big B has not forgotten her and still keeps in touch.
Marie was with the nursing section of St Philomena's Hospital in 1983 when the anxious Coolie film crew rushed Bachchan there.

Tests revealed at the time that he had suffered a perforation of the small intestine. He also had other problems like mystene agravis and asthama which made treatment more complicated.
Bachchan trusted Marie so much that he insisted that only she administer the drips, injections and medication to him during his 10-day stay at the hospital.
The ward where Big B stayed, 'B-Ward', in St Philomena's later became a place of great interest among visitors. Administrator of the hospital Sister Cycele said, "The room is now renovated."
And when he was later shifted to a hospital in Mumbai, he insisted that Marie accompany him there. In hospital circles, this was an unlikely request. But the large-hearted nurse accompanied the star as he travelled by a private aircraft.

Recounting the time, the nurse said, "Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and others visited us all a few months after he was discharged from St Philomena's hospital. He spent time in the chapel with us.
The whole nation was praying for Bachchan and he was keen to complete his prayer vows. Since I told him that I had prayed to Infant Jesus for his safe recovery, a grateful Bachchan visited the Infant Jesus Church and spent about 10-20 minutes thanking god there.
He had told his brother to make a donation at St Philomena's hospital." Bachchan later arranged a party for all of them at the Bangalore Palace. The entire team that treated him was invited.
Marie said, "He garlanded me and though initially I was hesitant. later I said 'ok'." Big B still sends greeting cards and keeps in touch. "I visited Bachchan last year in Mumbai.
He opened my car door and got this picture taken," she said, flashing a big smile and a bright photo with Bachchan. Marie is now chief coordinator with the St Theresa's Tender Loving Care Home, Hyderabad.
